Our team at our Western's Weyburn brokerage in Saskatchewan has always had strong roots in the community. Following a heartbreaking event, we banded together to pay tribute to a cherished team member through our support of STARS Air Ambulance.
Paige Ball, insurance advisor, volunteered as Weyburn’s team lead for the Western Communities Foundation (WCF). During her time as a volunteer, fundraising events were driven by her colleague and friend, Jody Froese, account executive with Western and passionate STARS supporter.
Tragically, Jody unexpectedly passed away in the summer of 2017 just three years after her husband was critically injured and given a second chance at life thanks to STARS.
These events shook the Weyburn community. At the time, we held off on our annual Support the Cause BBQ while we focused on healing our hearts. One year later, our Weyburn branch gathered its strength and began raising money – during their annual Main Street Summer BBQ – to support STARS in Jody’s memory.
“It only felt right to put our contributions towards a cause that mattered so deeply to Jody,” Paige recalled. “We really couldn’t pay tribute the way we wanted to at the time, so once we felt ready, we jumped right in.”
Every day STARS takes care of some of the most critical patients in Western Canada. STARS Air Ambulance funding comes from various operations including government contributions and fee for services, but 35 percent of their funding comes from private fundraising and donations.
“Our contribution to STARS may be small compared to what they need to provide the invaluable care for Western Canadians, but every donation contributes to saving a life when minutes matter,” said Scott Paxman, branch manager for Weyburn.
