The Red Deer branch has had many years of giving back to the community of Red Deer. Over the last 10 years, we have provided eight $500 Exceptional Achievement Citation Bursary Awards to deserving local high school graduates.
The spirit of the Western Communities Foundation permeates all that we do. We not only give financially when we can, we also give with our time. Some of our highlights over the years are:
- A recent $5,000 Infrastructure grant was provided to the new Ronald McDonald House built in Red Deer to support families of children with medical issues.
- The last two years, our staff has volunteered serving and providing food on several occasions to the Loaves and Fishes Outreach Centre, a program now operated by the Mustard Seed that serves under-privileged members of the community.
- In 2016, we supported two of our staff members who volunteer serving breakfast in the East View Elementary School breakfast program to ensure young students get a nutritious start to their school day.
- Most recently our branch really stepped up to help families who were evacuated to Red Deer as a result of the Fort McMurray wild fires. We got word that several families had showed up at a hotel here in Red Deer with virtually no clothes or belongings for their families. The staff immediately got together and, within an hour, we had raised $1,350 within the branch to purchase clothes, toiletries, toys and supplies for these families. We also participated in a fundraising BBQ to raise emergency funds for the families and volunteered to provide food and serve meals for most of the week for. An added benefit was that we could help them with all their insurance questions and help them get their claims set up!
We are proud to serve Central Alberta and all of our team members are involved in many other ways on their own serving in the community – “Because We Live Here”.
