At the start of 2015, our office committed to supporting the Hillcrest School Breakfast Program through our Support the Cause initiatives. This program offers a breakfast to all the kids in the school every morning. What a wonderful idea!! Not only did we raise nearly $2,000 for the program, Western also supports us volunteering every Friday morning to administer the program. That first morning serving the children of our community was very moving! Our funds covered almost a month’s worth of breakfasts!
In the fall of 2015, we put our heads together for a Western Communities Infrastructure Grant! We decided on Choose Life Ministries, a deserving organization that was renovating a home for young women in need of a safe haven. In January 2016, we were happy to hold a cheque presentation in office with all of the board members present (and of course cake!).
In 2015, we also presented a young gentleman that graduated from our local high school with a $500 Bursary. Our appreciative graduate was headed to the University of Regina. The thank you letter he wrote to our office brought tears to our eyes.
The spirit of the Western Communities Foundation permeates everything we do. Last season, a few of our staff members volunteered at the Estevan Bruins Hockey games by selling 50/50 tickets, and working the merchandise counter. It was great to mingle with the locals & the out of town guests & cheer on our local Estevan Bruins! In the fall of 2015, we had a Game Day sponsor (Estevan Bruins) and we all spent our Friday evening at the arena blowing up balloons for the kids, talking with the fans & doling out plenty of giveaways.
In the spring of 2016, we chose to support Family & Friends Social Club for our Support the Cause. This initiative helps integrate those with disabilities into the community by way of social events.
This summer, we also presented another Bursary at the High School Graduation Awards ceremony to a young graduate who is pursuing a university education. He was so happy and very surprised as he had no idea he was receiving this. What a wonderful feeling giving him $750 towards his education!
Our staff members are so involved in the community through personal initiatives – from the local rodeos and organizing fairs & exhibitions, to dance, German club, Rotary Club, and volunteering at the school. The Western Communities Foundation is a natural extension of who we are as people. It truly comes from the heart ‘Because We Live Here’!
We have much to be proud of here in the South East Corner of Saskatchewan!!
